Laser Focused

Focus is powerful, but often difficult to maintain. How often do we get pulled away from some activity simply by following some random thought that flies through our head? Moved off topic, we wander over to the next shiny object. It’s common to all and frustrating. The Buddha called it, ‘the monkey mind’. I call it a pain in the ass. I like my shiny objects, but it doesn’t make me very productive when I chase them. LOL

While trying to write this week my focus has been all over the place. I get an idea in my head, but just as quickly my cat will do something funny, or the phone will ring, or I’ll think, “Gosh, I just have to vacuum right this second. Sound familiar?

Wayne Dyer is quoted as saying, “What we focus on expands.” In other words, if we’re always focused on what we don’t have, we just get more of what we don’t have because that’s where our attention is. We can use what we don’t want as a catalyst, but what we do want, needs to be the focus.  

So, how do we become laser focused on a task or goal? I’m sure there’s plenty of advice out there on how to do that, but here’s what I’ve come up with in my crazy little brain. When I’m writing and I start to drift, I get up, walk around for a few minutes, and image in my head a laser pointed at my goal. I see the completed book or script I’m working on. I feel the happiness that surrounds it. I sit back down and continue. Okay, for as whacky and woo-woo as it sounds, it works for me. I don’t believe there is one sure-fire answer for any dilemma in life. Finding our own path to fulfillment of our dreams is a truly fun, creative adventure. So….I think I’ll just focus on that.
