OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder)

I read an article recently about OCD. As one who used to suffer debilitating panic attacks, I’m always interested in other types of disorders that seem to pop in out of nowhere. I’ve always been curious about the ‘why’ of them. How is it that some people have anxiety or extreme panic and others do not? Why do some people develop this affliction that causes them to repeat an action over and over again in order for them to remain calm? The mind is such a tricky space, with no two being exactly alike.

In OCD, (obsessive compulsive disorder), someone may have to lock or unlock a door 15 times before they enter or leave. Or, they can’t sleep until every glass is washed and lined up in the cupboard just so. It can be a horrific way to live.

Then I wondered if these types of things can be interrupted or altered. I did, with my agoraphobia. I finally left the house…I no longer have panic attacks. So, how did I do it? Why did my silly songs, writing, dancing around in my living room, and repeating uplifting phases work for me?

I don’t have the answers, but I wonder, if our brain unconsciously created panic and OCD, would it be possible (as in my case) to consciously redirect our thinking? How much control do we have?

What do you think? There seems to be various ways one could approach a problem like OCD…meditation, yoga, tai chi, counseling, but could we find an easier way? How could we view it differently? Since everything in life has it’s opposite, dark and light, truth and lie, happy and sad…perhaps OCD has its opposite as well…maybe instead of OCD standing for obsessive compulsive disorder, it could be flipped to its opposite, OCD meaning obsessive caring daily.

Again…no answers here, just things to think about. Have any of you rid yourself of anything like OCD or panic? I’d love to hear about it.

Ciao for now.
