Illusion
Who doesn’t love a good illusion? When the playing card disappears from the magician’s hand and shows up in the purse of a woman in the third row, we all gasp with delight. Prestidigitation. Old as time, magic is a hallmark of entertainment.
Once my murder mystery, ‘Third’s Time’s the Charm,’ is released at the end of the year, I hope to have a contract for my next book, ‘Focused Hocus Pocus.’ The killer in this book is a master of deception. Through his rhyming clues, and ability to remain invisible, he leads police on a wild goose chase, successfully concealing his true identity and motives.
This mystery got me thinking about how we can be illusionary in our own lives. Is the face we present to others a true representation of who we are? Like a first date when we show the best side of us, do we neglect to complete that image later on and reveal all facets of our nature? Are illusion and deceit the same thing? In both cases what is being presented is not the full truth.
Authenticity is something I strive towards. It’s not an easy thing to do. Fear is always high that who I am deep inside will be rejected. Even writing these posts evokes some anxiety. Do the things I find magical and mysterious seem idiotic or silly to others?
The greatest gift we can give anyone is total acceptance of who they are, warts and all. To earn that acceptance, we have to be willing to reveal ourselves, without illusion. That, my friends is a feat in itself.
Thank goodness this life is about the journey and not the destination. It gives me time to be bolder, be better, ask more questions, and mold my world into the vision I see in my head. Whew! For late-bloomers like me, that’s a wonderful thing!

Yay! Congratulations to Michale, on getting her first novel published. Definitely looking forward to getting a copy of my own. If I pay postage to and fro Memphis to Oregon, would you sign your first novel for me? When you get famous, I’ll just jack-up the price and then everyone wins, right? Right.
In all sincerity, it’s been fun working with Michale and invaluable watching her (via Zoom read-throughs) reactions of her own words. Luckily, a mutual friend connected us and other actors to help the princess along and it’s so rewarding to see her already publish the first novel.
I love Michale’s work because she’s never afraid to confront the, potentially, uncomfortable. I appreciate she lives with authenticity and anything less is disingenuous.
Folks, make sure you pay attention to Michale’s work. Thank you, friend, for sharing your woman’s perspective on the world. Let’s have the women tell the story now. The straight, white male perspective is and has been getting tired for much too long. Not that this qualifies me as someone to listen to, but I am a straight, white male and our demographic just can’t deliver the full truth.
